I’m excited to introduce the first book in a new series. Fire Games begins not long after the end of the Rhythm of Rivalry series. You will encounter a few familiar characters.
I believe every story is ultimately about who the characters are, not what they do or what happens to them. When I think back to my favorite novels, I think about the characters as if they’re old friends. I feel their struggles and their triumphs. The plot itself is simply the path they take, while the real story comes from their decisions, their interactions, their failures, and their growth. Keeping this in mind, I strived to create unforgettable personalities. Please enjoy this new series.
A quick note about capitalization: In my previous series, I chose to capitalize the names of the different energies, like Bastial and Sartious, but I decided to write these words in lowercase in this series. The same goes for words like “king” and “queen.” I am only capitalizing them in this series when using them with a name, such as “King Quince.” The reason for this change is just out of personal preference. It has nothing to do with the series itself. If you have feedback about this, feel free to let me know in the comments or through email.
Here’s the description of Fire Games:
Neeko’s quiet evening is interrupted when a fire-mage of the king’s army comes to his door demanding hospitality for the night. She says war is beginning, but this becomes the least of Neeko’s concerns when an altercation erupts between his drunken father and the fire-mage, resulting in his home burned to the ground with his father buried beneath the rubble.
His only justice? A redemption scroll—payment for damages if Neeko can bring it to the king’s master of coin in the capital before it expires. With the war of two kingdoms clashing amid towns, the trek will be perilous, but having a hidden talent for magic, Neeko’s not deterred. Especially so when he learns his recently acquired companion, possessing her own redemption scroll, knows the land better than anyone. She may have a few oddities, like singing her thoughts and stashing weapons in occupied graves, but Neeko would put up with worse to get to the capital in time.
Now if only Neeko knew what really awaited at the capital.
